Holyrood to Grates Cove on Highway 70 shore road photo tour.
We traveled on the Avalon Peninsula from Holyrood to Grates Cove on #70. The main reason for the trip was to fine a the nice Newfoundland beach that we were told about. Close to Blackhead there is a small private campground that was a provincial park. The most interesting thing about the beach is that the sand is black. Also, close to this area is a small gorgeous view, roadside park that is easy to miss. At Old Perlican we deceased to do a clockwise loop to Grates Cove. The map shows a sort gravel road. Half way to Grates Cove the road turned into a goat path. I enjoyed it but my wife was sure we would destroy our car or end up at a dead end. Grates Cove is interesting and Bay de Verde is a nice small town.
Note: Newfoundland signs can only be understood by local people. On #70 there was a bridge washed out. They put up one detour sign that told us to turn left. We came to a Y in the road and took the good road. After 10 minutes we realized we were not going around the bridge. We took the other road and ended up on a goat path that even I would not take. Turning around we found other cars that were stopped and on cell phones for help. The best way around was to go back and go around on #75. It is common for Newfoundland signs to be vague. |
